2017’s Top Employment Discrimination Claims
As you may know, Boznos Law is a law firm located in Naperville, concentrating in the labor and employment area. As such, we come across all kinds of employment discrimination claims. We help both employees who were wronged as well as defend employers from unfounded actions. The agencies that are tasked with enforcing the discrimination laws are the Federal U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) and the Illinois Department of Human Rights (“IDHR”).
Late last month, a report was released on the number and type of workplace discrimination claims filed with the EEOC during 2017. A total of 84,254 Charges were filed in 2017! This represents a 8.2% decrease from the number of Charges filed during the previous year.
The top 10 categories of Charges filed with the EEOC during 2017 are as follows:
- Retaliation: 48.8% of all Charges filed;
- Race: 33.9%
- Disability: 31.9%
- Sex: 30.4% (includes sexual harassment)
- Age: 21.8%
- National Origin: 9.8%
- Religion: 4.1%
- Color: 3.8%
- Equal Pay Act: 1.2%
- Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (“GINA”): 0.2%
NOTE: These percentages add up to more than 100% because employees often allege multiple types of illegal action in their Charges.
